HOFF! SIIIIICK. Also John Stewart was pretty good. I like the bit where they did a tribute to issues films, ones that deal with homophobia and racism and stuff like that, and Stewart's like "And they were never problems again."

Worst part was seeing Lauren Bacall being really crap at reading the prompter. What was with the orchestra playing what sounded like Oh Canada about four times?

It's hard to be a pimp...

Haha, that was fucking awesome! More winners should be like them and speak in choppy short sentences and they won't get played out by the orchestra.

"Yeah, shout out to my life partner... dead mother, respect... all you people... yeah, the contestants... those who took the journey with me... yeah"

"for those of you who are keeping count, that's martin scorcese: zero oscars, three 6 mafia: one".

Re: It's hard to be a pimp...

hehe, I'd rather have martin scorcese win no awards than getting one for something like Gangs of New York or The Aviator.

That Lauren Bacall bit was cringe-worthy. Its amazing when three minutes feel like an eternity.

John Stewart was awesome! I loved how he was smooth at doing the emcee thing, but how also a lot of his jokes were pitched at Hollywood from an outsider's perspective. Like interupted in a return from an ad break trying to sell the Hollywood audience on Scientology. It didn't feel buddy buddy ass-kissing like the supposed master of Oscar hosts Billy Crystal's gigs usually feel like.

My only fear about Hoff's win is that he will succumb to Kevin Spacey syndrome - where an awesome character actor goes downhill by getting an oscar and trying to become a leading man star (from Glengarry Glen Ross to Pay It Forward??). Though I think Hoff's ego is relatively tame in comparison to Spacey's. I loved it when Hoff went up to get the award - just a stocky, bearded, everyday guy sheepishly walking up the stage, nervous as fuck. I love you, Hoff!

yeah i'm with you. hopefully he'll keep trying to challenge himself instead of succumbing.

also, what the frigg was with crash getting best picture? i thought the racial equality oscars was like two years ago or something? that film was so not even nomination quality. but, of course it was all "hey, lets not quarrel and be racist- lets all be friends." to be honest goodnight and goodluck was far too political to win (which is a real shame), munich was a big nothing (another amistad?) and capote and brokeback were both about fags so they weren't in with a chance. i guess we had it coming.

rock on ang lee though - fucking deserved!

i haven't seen crash but i've read some pretty negative reviews
one of them called it 'pure television melodrama'

Speaking of succumbing, the Hoff being the bad guy in Mission Impossible III is the only interesting thing about it!

I liked Munich despite its flaws, but it wasn't going to win. Not enough heat. Goodnight and Good Luck was a good film, but somewhat small scaled and not emotionally gripping. Of the films I saw, (haven't seen Capote), I thought Brokeback should've won. Crash is okay... but it's just a watered down version of Magnolia with a more specific social studies topic. There are some great bits - like the car crash - but it's bit too much of a white liberal 'let's feel good bout our differences' thing. Or a two hour pilot to a Six Feet Under type show.

Though I loved how the people who made Crash carried on like it was a probing, controversial film. Even funnier was the Memoirs of a Geisha winners who thanked Sony Pictures or whoever for being "brave" enough to make this film. And I'm like, "Yeah, it was really brave of them to make a film adaptation out of a best-selling novel!" Maybe next year, we'll get the same designers congratualting Hollywood for being courageous enough for making The Davinci Code.

i made EXACTLY the same comment when dion bebe said sony were brave.

totally agree about crash pissing in magnolia's pocket. only magnolia had interesting characters who you actually cared about.
